     Tornado Safety

Do

  • Get to the basement. (If your basement is only partially underground, or a walk-out basement, consult an expert about sheltering.)
  • If a basement isn't available, either get to a ground-level interior bathroom (in the shower or tub), or a room with no windows, a closet, or the space beneath an interior stairway.
  • Protect yourself under sturdy furniture, or cover yourself using mattresses and pillows, especially your head and neck.
  • If you're caught outside, first seek shelter. If there's no place to shelter, lie flat in a ditch or low-lying area away from your vehicle, and be aware of the possibility of sudden flooding.

Do Not

  • DO NOT seek shelter in places with wide-span roofs (large box stores, gymnasiums, shopping malls).
  • DO NOT seek shelter in mobile homes.
  • DO NOT seek shelter under a bridge or overpass.
  • DO NOT attempt to outrun a tornado in your automobile.
  • DO NOT drive into standing water. If you misjudge the water's depth, you could become stranded.
  • DO NOT assume that a tornado won't strike a particular type of landscape. Tornadoes can strike anywhere.
