Get to the basement. (If your basement is only partially underground, or a walk-out basement, consult an expert about sheltering.)
If a basement isn't available, either get to a ground-level interior bathroom (in the shower or tub), or a room with no windows, a closet, or the space beneath an interior stairway.
Protect yourself under sturdy furniture, or cover yourself using mattresses and pillows, especially your head and neck.
If you're caught outside, first seek shelter. If there's no place to shelter, lie flat in a ditch or low-lying area away from your vehicle, and be aware of the possibility of sudden flooding.

DO NOT seek shelter in places with wide-span roofs (large box stores, gymnasiums, shopping malls).
DO NOT seek shelter in mobile homes.
DO NOT seek shelter under a bridge or overpass.
DO NOT attempt to outrun a tornado in your automobile.
DO NOT drive into standing water. If you misjudge the water's depth, you could become stranded.
DO NOT assume that a tornado won't strike a particular type of landscape. Tornadoes can strike anywhere.
