(If your basement is only partially underground, or a walk-out basement, consult an expert about sheltering.) - If a basement isn't available, either get to a ground-level interior bathroom (in the shower or tub), or a room with no windows, a closet, or the space beneath an interior stairway. - Protect yourself under sturdy furniture, or cover yourself using mattresses and pillows, especially your head and neck. - If you're caught outside, first seek shelter. If there's no place to shelter, lie flat in a ditch or low-lying area away from your vehicle, and be aware of the possibility of sudden flooding. ### Do Not - DO NOT seek shelter in places with wide-span roofs (large box stores, gymnasiums, shopping malls). - DO NOT seek shelter in mobile homes. - DO NOT seek shelter under a bridge or overpass. - DO NOT attempt to outrun a tornado in your automobile. - DO NOT drive into standing water. If you misjudge the water's depth, you could become stranded. - DO NOT assume that a tornado won't strike a particular type of landscape. Tornadoes can strike anywhere. #### Add/Edit Shelter This database of shelters benefits everyone.  It relies on people like you to help keep it up to date.
