Statistics and Storm Shelters

Statistics are an important part of the research.  The numbers don’t lie.  When it comes to tornadoes, several states claim to be the #1 ‘worst’ place to live.  True results, however, can change according to the question being answered.  For example, if ranking a state by the highest total AND number of 'killer' tornadoes, the answer is Texas on both accounts.  Yet, if you look at ‘killer’ tornadoes as a percentage of all tornadoes, Texas, doesn’t even rank and Tennessee is #1. Massachusetts has the highest number of deaths per 10,000 square miles, while Florida has the highest annual tornadoes per 10,000 square miles.  What does all this mean?  Well, frankly speaking, it means no matter which state you live in, if there is a chance of tornadoes, there is a chance you could be caught off-guard.

Statistics are from The Tornado Project.

So what do statistics teach us about tornadoes?

Tornadoes are not politically correct, nor are they polite.  They don’t go through areas that might have a better chance of surviving them or are better prepared at handling their devastation.  They just destroy whatever and whoever is in their path.  Disaster relief programs across the nation never seem to be short of work and can never have enough volunteers.  So statistics on tornadoes just tell you that no matter where you live if a tornado is a possibility, you need a shelter! Survive-a-Storm Shelters participates in disaster relief, and not just for victims of tornadoes.  We have a history of helping communities regain their strength after devastation including events like Hurricane Katrina and building shelters for our military infantrymen.
