Mississippi Community Safe Rooms

Mississippi  "A Safe Place to Go Initiative"

The citizens of Pontotoc County, Mississippi don't have to worry about tornadoes! Since the 2001 disaster, over 30 community storm shelters have been constructed in their county. The other half of the community tornado shelters are located in other small towns.Typically the community safe rooms are located in, behind, or next to city buildings like fire, police, and emergency centers. Ecru, Mississippi, that has a population of under 1000, yet commendably has five community shelters located behind their Ecru fire and police departments. These community safe rooms measure 13 feet by 13 feet by 7.5 feet, and were reimbursed by federal funding. According to Ecru's town officials, the shelters have been filled each time there is a tornado warning since they installed their community safe rooms.  What makes this so remarkable is that Mississippi ranks tenth below other states including Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Florida, Nebraska, Illinois, Colorado, Iowa, Alabama, and Missouri. And Mississippi isn't a state with more resources than the other states, but instead, realizes the importance of taking care of people versus things.
